On October 6, 2023, the results of the election to Rada Doskonałości Naukowej (Polish State Council for Professorship), 2nd term (2024-2027) were announced. 44,763 scientists with Habilitation degrees voted (online) to elect 169 scientists, representing 55 disciplines in 10 scientific fields, as members of the Council (in each discipline, 3 people are selected). Candidates recommended by universities and institutes must have a scientific rating of at least B+.
Prof. Dr. Hab. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh (Wroclaw University of Technology) was one of 9 candidates in the Information and Communications Technology discipline who received the highest number of votes (301), 75 votes more than the second place. In the first term, Prof. Dr. Hab. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh received 167 votes (ranked 2nd) [1]. This indicates that he has received an increased level of trust and appreciation.
Prof. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh is known as a world-leading scientist in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Collective Intelligence. He has presented 28 plenary papers at conferences, published 46 books, and more than 450 articles in journals and conference proceedings. He is also the editor-in-chief of two international journals with high Impact Factor [2]. Among them is the Journal of Information and Telecommunication (JIT) of Ton Duc Thang University.
In 2022, SCIMago has classified 4 main categories of JIT, including: Computer Networks and Communications, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering into the Q2 group and Computer Science Applications into the Q3 group. In addition, according to Scopus, the JIT journal’s Cite Score as of June 7, 2023 was 5.4; JIT is listed in the Web of Science in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) category with an Impact Factor (IF) of 2.7.
Prof. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh is the Chairman of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society (IEEE SMC) Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence. He was also awarded the title of Distinguished Scientist of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and an Honored Guest of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
He supervised 16 PhD students in Poland in the cooperation program with Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City and Yeungnam University (Korea). He was listed in the TOP 2% of the list of scientists with the most cited publications (compiled by Stanford University and Elsevier in 2019).
Prof. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh has also made many valuable contributions to the country’s scientific training and research. He is the initiator and organizer of many international conferences on information technology in Vietnam, attracting the participation of many leading scientists. He also guided many Vietnamese PhD students to successfully defend their doctoral dissertations.
Prof. Thanh studied in Poland in 1979, defended his doctoral thesis in 1989, and was awarded the title of professor in 2006. In 2009, he was honored to be the first Vietnamese person to be awarded the title of State Professor by the President of Poland. In 2011, he was specially awarded the title of Professor of Vietnam.
In 2021, he was awarded the Golden Cross Medal, in 2022 he received the Professor Zdzisław Pawlak Award for an outstanding research in the field of computer science. He has twice received the “Most Active TC” award from IEEE SMC.
In April 2023, Prof. Dr. Hab. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh was awarded the First Class Merit Medal by Polish President Andrzej Duda.
